Together with researchers at CQUniversity in Australia, WHOOP conducted a study to determine if changes in respiratory rate could serve as an indicator of COVID-19.
Findings showed that our algorithm developed via WHOOP respiratory rate data distinguished between healthy individuals and infected individuals both prior to and during symptoms in some cases. This suggests WHOOP could be developed as an early detection tool to help identify people who should self-isolate and seek testing.
The WHOOP Journal now includes a COVID-19 tracking option, which allows members to self-report symptoms or a positive infection. Members can then see how their recovery and sleep data are impacted via a weekly and monthly Performance Assessment. Reporting you have contracted or been tested for COVID-19 will help us further our product development and research into COVID-19 symptoms, treatment, mitigation, and population health management.

In response to the pandemic, WHOOP fast-tracked daily respiratory rate and weekly trends to the mobile app. Changes in respiratory rate have been linked to illness and other significant changes in physiology, and may be an important metric you can pay attention to.

CQUniversity and WHOOP conducted an anonymized, aggregated study of 50,000 members that showed how social distancing measures and new lifestyle routines encourage positive behavior change to stay healthy. We believe this is the first study to quantify the impact on health related behaviors – specifically sleep timing and duration, and exercise frequency, intensity, and modality – during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, we believe this is the first paper that has ever shown that such a small change in sleep has this measurable effect on cardiovascular health.

WHOOP is conducting a study by administering a COVID survey developed by scientists at Brigham Health, Harvard Medical School, Monash University, Austin Health, and ARCHANGELS. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) also contributed questions to this survey. By combining WHOOP data with behavioral research in areas of stress, mental health, changes in lifestyle, and more, WHOOP is helping policy makers and healthcare providers plan for the future.
